Today, I picked up our latest acquisition from the post office: Queering the Vampire Narrative, edited by Amanda Jo Hobson and U. Melissa Anyiwo. The book’s copyright date is 2024, but it was released in 2023.

It was acquired directly from Brill, the book’s publisher, in anticipation of a review to be published in the Journal of Vampire Studies—but not in the upcoming issue. Those reviews are sorted.

Hobson and Anyiwo are both members of the journal’s advisory board (that played no part in the decision to review the book). They previously collabed on Race and the Vampire Narrative (2015) and Gender in the Vampire Narrative (2016).

Though not specifically part of the VSA Library, I also picked up two other books from the post office today.

The first was Debbie Berne’s The Design of Books: An Explainer for Authors, Editors, Agents, and Other Curious Readers (2024). I came across it when I found out there was going to be a new edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.1 Both books are published by the University of Chicago Press.2

As someone who constantly tinkers with layout and design, I thought it might be helpful to my work on the Journal.

The second is…a secret. Only because it’s research material for an article I’ve been working on. All I’ll say at this stage is that it covers a certain library collection.

  2. Speaking of University of Chicago Press publications, I placed an order for the style manual. The manual and Berne’s book were both purchased thanks to a very generous donation by VSA member Dea. Thank you! ↩︎
