The New England Vampire Panic: A Graveyard Discussion
Dive into the complex intersection of folklore, medicine, and social norms of Victorian Era Rhode Island in this outdoor lecture.
Learn about disease, superstition, and desperation in late 19th century South County as we examine the factors that led to the exhumation of supposed vampire Mercy Brown. We will explore the Victorian cult of death, outdated medical science, and local history as well as the lasting impact of tuberculosis today.
This event will be held outside and in-person at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Exeter, the final resting place of Mercy Brown. We welcome you to join us after the talk for Archaeology Social Hour at nearby pub Back 40 where food and beverages will be available for purchase.
The talk should last about 1.5 hours, so please dress appropriately and bring a folding chair or a blanket to sit.
Proceeds to benefit the Rhode Island Archaeology Society and the Chestnut Hill Baptist Church.
In the event of rain, we will sent out an email to let folks know that the event has been rescheduled. Raindate will be a Saturday in November.
